"it's about silence, which my work contains, deterioriation and beauty. but simultaneously that same beauty should have a little edge to it, because that is what makes it exciting."
Numerous small and medium-sized paintings, all unmistakeably belonging to one specific family. Hans Boer's works feature a distinct horizontal or vertical surface division, allowing them to be associated with landscapes. Nevertheless, for Boer, these works are not landscapes at all. "I do not mind viewers visualising landscapes in my work, however it is my intention to exceed that reference." His paintings impart a completely unique personal sense of silence and monumentality with a certain calm motionlessness. He challenges the peacefulness of his compositions with the movement of his brush strokes creating a certain volatility. This duality is also illustrated by the shapes and colours which often have their counterpart elsewhere within the painting's plane. "I am continuously stripping the unnecessary, reducing the level of detail to ensure that the viewer doesn't lose him or herself in the recognisable shapes."
