"Sillage" by Sophie De Zutter is a contemporary abstract artwork that explores movement, memory, and the quiet trace of presence through the artist’s signature use of handmade paper, clay, and natural pigments. The title "Sillage"—French for “wake” or “trail,” as left by a boat moving through water—suggests the invisible path of something that has passed, evoking the subtle remnants of movement frozen in time.
The surface reveals delicate textures, soft undulations, and subtle tonal shifts that emerge from the slow, intuitive process of working with paper and natural pigments. De Zutter welcomes the imperfections that appear—cracks, roughness, and delicate nuances—recognising their authenticity and the depth they bring. Paper invites fragility, lightness, and movement, while clay brings strength, anchorage, and depth. The fibres of paper intertwine and freeze, while clay lives, contracts, and gives relief, creating a subtle dialogue between lightness and stability.
This minimalist piece leaves space for the viewer’s personal interpretation, allowing them to resonate with their own feelings. Its soft, neutral palette and organic surface make it ideally suited for contemporary interiors that value simplicity, warmth, and tactile depth—such as modern living spaces, minimalist bedrooms, calm office environments, or interiors inspired by wabi-sabi and natural aesthetics. "Sillage" reflects De Zutter’s belief that she explores “time, process, and co-creation with matter,” and embodies her philosophy that “art is vibration, emotion its resonance.”
