"Evasion" (2026) is a work in handmade linen paper, natural paint, and canvas (80 x 100 cm) by Belgian artist Sophie De Zutter (b. 1979). The title — "escape" — suits the composition: against a luminous, pale ground, clusters of cobalt blue shapes appear to float and drift, like fragments caught mid-motion or thoughts loosening their hold.

As with all of De Zutter's work, the linen paper forming the support is handmade using traditional papermaking techniques learned through the transmission of an ancestral craft, grounding the piece in a slow, tactile process before the first mark of paint is even applied. Natural pigments are layered onto this textured ground, allowing cracks, roughness, and delicate nuances to gradually unfold, while the cobalt forms punctuate the surface with quiet intensity, their saturated tone deepening the sense of space and distance.

The result is a piece in which fragility and strength coexist in delicate balance, and where light seems to emanate from within the material itself. At 80 x 100 cm, "Evasion" offers a meditative, airy presence, its drifting blue forms inviting the eye to wander and the mind to follow.
