Didier Engels
Belgian, b. 1965

Didier Engels is a Belgian photographer, born in 1965, whose subject is the industrial poetry of the port. He grew up strolling the docks; at the age of twenty he worked as a docker at the port of Zeebrugge, and the maritime world never left him. After more than thirty years as a textile stylist and interior design architect — a career built on a deep knowledge of surfaces, patinas and colour — he turned to photography in 2015, self-taught, returning to his first memories of the docks.
His camera is drawn to the cargo container in all its aged glory: steel battered by sea spray, sun and countless miles of global travel. Engels does not simply document the port — he isolates and elevates it. Through meticulous framing he strips away the distractions of the industrial environment to concentrate on colour and form, until faded blues, oxidized reds and sun-bleached yellows fill the frame. Sedimentary textures and rust marks are celebrated as layers of history, and the container becomes an abstract, painterly composition that hovers between reality and pure abstraction.
His photographs are printed as limited editions on baryta paper, in editions of eight plus two artist proofs. His work has been exhibited at galleries and art fairs across Europe and the United States, and is represented by The Lane.
