Amélie Crépy
French, b. 1984
Born in Hertfordshire and raised in Suffolk to French parents with a family history in hospitality and the textile industry, Amélie studied fashion design, specialising in womenswear, couture and visual merchandising before moving toward the more commercial practices of textiles print design. A fast-paced environment which rewarded a keen eye for innovation and trend, she produced motifs and embroidery designs that sold successfully to both luxury and high-street labels internationally.
In 2014 she founded Creative Pattern Studio which continue to deliver exceptional artwork and digital prints to both interior and fashion labels. During this time, she also held specialised positions at interior textile, print and fashion houses, allowing her to oversee the implementation of her designs into finished products, both printed and woven.
These hands-on opportunities nurtured a new-found respect for textile and the application of fabrics: enabling her to appreciate not only their marketable value but also understand their intrinsic ability to exist as artwork.
Questions about Amélie
Who is Amélie Crépy?
Amélie Crépy is a French artist, born 1984, working with handmade oak gall ink on pure linen. Born in Hertfordshire and raised in Suffolk to French parents, she trained in fashion and textile design before turning to natural pigments and traditional mediums.
What are the 'Ink Relic' works?
Her ongoing Ink Relic series — large and demi-scale — treats each painting as a relic-like fragment: mark, stain and weave preserved on linen, drawing on the memory of the textile world she came from.
Why oak gall ink on linen?
Oak gall ink is a natural, ancient medium; on pure linen it lets her work slowly and honestly, replicating the precision of digital print with nothing but hand and pigment. She founded Creative Pattern Studio in 2014 after a decade designing textiles for luxury and high-street labels.
Where has Amélie Crépy exhibited?
At London Craft Week, One Paved Court and the Affordable Art Fairs, and with The Lane in Cranbrook (Kent) and Knokke (Belgium).
